A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Two types of dentures are available -- complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

Complete Dentures

A complete denture (also known as a full denture, false teeth or plate) is a removable appliance used when all teeth within a jaw have been lost and need to be prosthetically replaced. In contrast to a partial denture, a complete denture is constructed when there are no more teeth left in an upper or lower arch. A complete denture can be opposed by natural dentition, a partial or complete denture, fixed appliances or, sometimes, soft tissues.

Full (complete) dentures are constructed to restore speech, chewing function as well as for a natural, beautiful smile.

Partial Dentures

If you're missing only some of your teeth, a partial denture can be constructed to fill in the gaps between the remaining teeth. Partial dentures can be made of acrylic with or without a metal base. The advantage to retaining some of your own natural teeth is that partial dentures are generally much easier to wear than full dentures as it can grip the remaining teeth.
